Freelance Focus with Erica Richardson

Today we’re talking to Erica Richardson, a freelance hairstylist who works in London and Essex. Here Erica shares what she loves about being freelance.

CHB: When was the first time you realised you wanted to go freelance?

Erica: I realised I wanted to do it after seeing some of my other hairdresser friends go freelance. Until that point, I’d never considered it before but the more I thought about it, the more I realised how it would it allow me to establish a better work/home life balance.

CHB: What’s the best part about being freelance?

Erica: Choosing and working with the products that I love! I get to use what I enjoy on my clients, and they end up loving those products too!

CHB: What’s the most challenging part of being freelance?

Erica: It’s a good life but it’s a lot of work and you do struggle with balancing out work vs life.  It means working just that bit harder to get where you want to in your career, but it’s rewarding.

CHB: How do you stay up to date with the hair community?

Erica: I stay up to date through social media and different groups on Facebook. This helps me know what the new top trends are and how to achieve them. Following pages like L’Oréal and Redken help me stay up to date with new product launches.

CHB: Share your best confidence-building tip?

Erica: Be yourself! Be the most positive, confident version of yourself and everything else will fall into place.

CHB: What’s the most valuable piece of advice you would offer to someone who wants to go freelance but feels nervous or unsure?

Erica: Start by working on some clients at home before looking into renting a chair. This helps you get a feel for working solo without the additional pressure of being in a completely new environment. This will also help you work out if you want to work from home or in a salon; for me I prefer the salon, but you might prefer working at home. Find out what you prefer and go with it.
