Freelance Focus with Hannah Rancic
Today we’re talking to Hannah Rancic, a mobile hairstylist based in Bexhill, East Sussex. Specialising in colour and hair extensions, here Hannah shares what she loves about being freelance.

Capital: When did you first realise you wanted to go freelance?
Hannah: I’ve been in the hair world since I was 14; I started out sweeping floors and just fell in love with the industry. Over time, I realised I wanted a bit more freedom to create my own vibe and work in a way that felt true to me. I learned so much working in salons, but I always felt I’d thrive better by doing things my own way. Going freelance gave me that freedom, which has been especially important since becoming a mum of two! Being able to work around my family while still doing what I love has been such a blessing.
Capital: What’s the best thing about being freelance?
Hannah: Freedom, hands down. I get to create a space that reflects me, build real connections with my clients and work on my own terms. I can be present for my kids, without having to miss out on their milestones or mine. Plus, I’ve been able to say yes to opportunities that light me up, like bridal work, creative projects, or training days, without needing anyone else’s permission.
Capital: What’s the most challenging part of being freelance?
Hannah: Definitely juggling all the roles; stylist, receptionist, cleaner, social media manager, accountant and of course, full-time mum!
It can be overwhelming, but once you find your rhythm (and remember to take a break now and again), it really is so worth it.
Capital: How do you stay up to date with the hair/beauty community?
Hannah: I’m always learning. I jump on courses whenever I can and stay plugged into online education and trends. Over the last year, I’ve also had the chance to freelance with an amazing bridal hair and makeup team. It’s enabled me to get training on the job and learn from other talented artists and has been such an inspiring experience. It’s pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way.
Capital: What’s your best confidence-building tip?
Hannah: Do the scary thing anyway. Your confidence builds every time you take a step outside your comfort zone and prove to yourself that you can. Back yourself, even if your voice shakes. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and remind yourself why you started.
Capital: What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’d offer to someone who wants to go freelance but feels nervous or unsure?
Hannah: Start before you’re ready. You’ll never have it all figured out, and that’s okay. It’s about progress, not perfection. You’ll grow so much by just doing, learning from the challenges, and building something that reflects you. Be brave.
