Freelance Focus with Holly Pugh

Welcome to Freelance Focus, where we talk to some of our favourite freelancers about how they got here and how they stay motivated – and organised! If you’d like to be featured just email marketing@capitalhb.co.uk and tell us why!

This week we’re chatting to the lovely Holly Pugh. Read on for her advice on going freelance.

CHB: When was the first time you realised you wanted to go freelance?

Holly: I realised I wanted to go self-employed when I returned to work after six months of maternity leave. I’m incredibly passionate about hairdressing, and I didn’t want to lose my career just because I’d become a mum. But I found myself feeling torn between the two; I couldn’t seem to find the right balance. That’s when I knew something had to change and self-employment felt like the path that would allow me to thrive as a mum and as a hairdresser.

CHB: What’s the best part of being freelance?

Holly: For me, it’s all about balance. Going self-employed has given me the freedom to shape my own schedule and find a lifestyle that works for both my career and my family. I also love being able to offer a more personal experience to each client; it’s not a conveyor belt of appointments, just real, one-on-one time that makes every client feel special.

CHB: What’s the most challenging part of being freelance?

Holly: The unknown. You never quite know when your next quiet spell is coming and there’s no guaranteed income. On top of that, staying up to date with trends, constantly showing up on social media and keeping your work visible is a full-time job in itself! But it’s all part of the journey.

Social media is huge in the hairdressing world; there’s always someone new to be inspired by or a trend making waves. I try to stay connected with other stylists, attend networking events and go to workshops whenever I can. It’s so important to keep learning and evolving.

CHB: Best confidence-building tip?

Holly: Invest in yourself. I’ve already decided 2025 is my year; I recently went to a networking event that completely reignited my passion and I’ve got a confidence-building workshop coming up this month. Being self-employed isn’t just about being good at hair; it’s about people buying into you. Personal branding is everything, so take the time to grow your self, not just your skillset.

CHB: What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to go freelance but feels nervous or unsure?

Holly: Just go for it. Trust your gut and do what feels right for you. It’s scary at first, but if you work hard and keep showing up, everything will fall into place. Back yourself; you’ve got this!
