CHB: When was the first time you realised you wanted to work in hair?

Danny: The thought of becoming a hairdresser never crossed my mind when I was at school; I had my sights set on a completely different path and imagined myself on TV!

So I took a bit of a winding road to get into hairdressing, but that delay only fuelled my passion. I was always the one glued to the front row at hair shows, soaking in the creativity and innovation. It was like watching magic unfold. After years of nurturing that interest, I finally took the plunge and dove headfirst into the world of hairdressing over 13 years ago. It’s been an exhilarating journey ever since!

CHB: What was your first job?

Danny: My first job in hairdressing came a bit later than most; I was 21 when I landed my first position at a well-known Irish salon, Peter Mark. It was an exciting time for me; I did my training there and learned everything from colouring techniques to cutting styles, and I had the incredible opportunity to attend hair shows. Those experiences really sparked my interest in competitions and showcases and I knew I had found my passion.

CHB: Did you have a mentor?

Danny: I have been fortunate to encounter a multitude of mentors who have shaped my path, but two individuals really stand out: Mark Leeson and Richard Darby.

Mark, with his unparalleled passion for the craft, taught me the importance of authenticity and creativity in my work. His belief in my potential encouraged me to embrace my own unique style and express myself. Mark’s mentorship was not just about honing technical skills. it was about giving me a mindset of confidence and resilience.

Then there’s Richard Darby, who has an extraordinary ability to see the best in people. He instilled in me the belief that I could achieve greatness and he pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and pursue opportunities I once thought were beyond my reach. It was Richard who inspired me to aim for the British Hairdressing Awards and to never settle for mediocrity.

Together, Mark and Richard have not only taught me the technical aspects of hairdressing but have also instilled in me the values of perseverance, self-belief and the importance of pursuing your passions. Their mentorship has guided me through challenges, and they’ve been there to celebrate my successes. I am eternally grateful for their influence. Their impact on my life is immeasurable.

CHB: How did you build up your confidence?

Danny: I owe a significant part of building my confidence to the mentorship and support I received from remarkable individuals like Mark, Richard and Karen Thomas. Their unwavering encouragement has been transformative.

CHB: What’s the most valuable piece of advice you would offer to someone who wants to go freelance?

Danny: Be sure to prioritise organisation and self-discipline. Start by establishing a solid financial foundation: track your income and expenses, set aside funds for taxes, and create a budget that accommodates both your personal and business needs.

Building a network is crucial; attend industry events and use social media to showcase your work, share insights and engage with your audience.

Believe in yourself and your unique talents. Embrace every opportunity to learn by taking as many courses as you can; continuous education is key in this ever-evolving industry and when you're freelance that's your responsibility.

Perseverance is essential; challenges will come up, but staying committed to your passion will lead you to success.
