Freelance Focus - Jay
Welcome to a brand-new addition to the blog! Freelance Focus is where we talk to some of our favourite freelancers about how they got here and how they stay motivated – and organised! If you’d like to be featured, just email marketing@capitalhb.co.uk and tell us why!
Our first Freelance Focus is with the lovely Jay, who’s run a mobile freelance business for over a year. What’s more, as well as being a full-time hair enthusiast Jay is also a part-time nurse for the NHS. Read on for her advice on going freelance.
Capital: When was the first time you realised you wanted to work and go freelance?
Jay: In 2024, after being out of the industry for 10 years, I wanted to come back and give myself a new, exciting challenge. I had no contacts or friends in the industry at all and wasn't sure where to begin. I just knew that I was ready for the next chapter of my life, and that working freelance meant that my options were limitless. I also knew that going freelance meant that I could ease myself back into the industry in my own time.
Capital: What’s the best thing about being freelance?
Jay: Having total control. Some may find this daunting, and at times it can be, but being freelance means that you can make all the decisions - big and small. It means that I'm able to say 'no' but also allows me to take on new experiences and challenges. The buck stops with me!
Capital: What’s the most challenging side of being freelance?
Jay: Definitely the business side of things; there's a lot you must do. Maths is not my forte and a lot of calculations need to be done when setting up and navigating through your business. Luckily, I have friends and family members who support me with completing my tax returns and sorting out business finances. I'm learning as I go with their help!
Capital: How do you stay up to date within the hair community?
Jay: I mostly use social media, often Instagram and TikTok. Trends come and go, and these platforms are a great way to see what the wider and even global community is getting up to. I love how I’m also able to connect with other freelance colourists and business owners from all around the world. From high fashion experts in Italy, to highly skilled, artistic colourists in South Korea, I stay inspired through connection.
Capital: What’s your best confidence building tip?
Jay: As someone who has experienced imposter syndrome, I can say that throwing yourself outside of your comfort zone is the main thing that will build your confidence. Nothing grows in your comfort zone. To develop your business, skills, confidence and overall professionalism, you have to do what scares you!
Capital: What’s the most valuable piece of advice you can offer to anyone who’s thinking about going freelance but feels nervous or unsure?
Jay: Connect with people who are already in the industry. Reach out to local freelancers and ask them how they got started. Never be afraid to ask questions and allow yourself to make mistakes. It is impossible to start a business and not stumble along the way. Mistakes are an opportunity to learn. Ask others for advice, their opinions and help - it'll allow you to be the best business owner you can be.
