Flawless

Make up trends come and go - and evolve. Contouring is something that has been a major talking point within the make up community for the past couple of years, mostly thanks to the likes of Kim Kardashian. But what makes a good contour job?

Google the word ‘contour’ and it’s inevitable that amongst the millions of YouTube tutorials that come up, many of them will focus entirely on Kim Kardashian, or rather, the work of her regular make up artist Mario Dedivanovic – also known on Instagram as @makeupbymario. With almost two million followers, Mario must be doing something right, right?

Aside from Mario there are a ton of bloggers and vlogger stalking about the various forms of contouring; several months ago the demise of the contour was announced, due to the arrival of strobing which focused less on depth of contour and more on mega highlighting, which was then closely followed by baking – a trend borrowed from the drag community, where excessive translucent powder is left to sit on the face for five to 10 minutes, allowing the heat from the skin to set – or bake – the foundation. But despite these mini trends, contouring is definitely not going anywhere, as it’s a trend which allows any woman to make the most of her face.

The top tip? Blend, blend, blend. Contouring can almost look scientific – or downright hilarious (have you seen the clown contour trend?) but if you don’t blend all those perfectly placed lines and dots, the result is hard, chalky and looks terrible once the person wearing the look has their photograph taken with a flash. So pick your favourite blending tool, and go at it!
