So You Want to Be a…
If you've recently embarked on your career journey in the hair and beauty industry but aren’t quite sure which path to specialise in, don’t worry you’re not alone. Whether you’re drawn to nails or dreaming of becoming an influencer, we’ve got some insider advice to help guide your next steps.
So You Want to Be a Nail Tech?
Practice is your friend — but precise practice is your bestie.
While social media is full of tutorials, be cautious many techniques shared online can be misleading or even unsafe. Practicing bad habits early on can slow your progress. Instead, prioritise in-person education whenever possible. Watching professionals up close lets you catch those subtle details how they set up their nail station, their movements, product handling, and more.
Top tips for getting started:
- Practice regularly on nail tips, friends, and family.
- Offer model rates instead of free treatments even a small fee helps cover product costs and keeps clients committed.
- Avoid overspending on products early on. Visit nail and beauty trade shows, get hands-on demonstrations, and ask about the brand’s education and support.
- Start your kit with essentials: a dotting tool, striper brush, a short thin brush, and key colours like nudes, reds, darks plus black, white, and gold for nail art. Build slowly as your clientele grows.
- Don’t underestimate traditional polish skills painting neatly and efficiently can land you assistant gigs on high-profile jobs.
So You Want to Be a Hair Influencer?
Your niche is your power. For Sarah Keane, it was scalp bleaching, and she gained a loyal following by being brutally honest about it. From the wins to the fails, her transparency built trust and credibility.
Here’s what Sarah learned on her influencer journey:
- Authenticity wins. Speak like you’re chatting with fellow stylists your audience will appreciate the realness.
- Don’t wait for motivation treat content creation like client work. Plan ahead, show up, and stay consistent.
- The best content either educates, entertains, or empowers. Share knowledge, show your personality, and give your audience something they can take with them.
“I mix education (like bleaching ratios), entertainment (relatable stylist moments), and empowerment (reminding hairdressers of their worth).” Sarah Keane @slkbleachexpert
