Beautiful Hair Moments From The MET Gala
The Met Gala is the Oscars of fashion, but you can’t make a fashion statement without the glam team. Check out the key hair trends we saw on the red carpet, and why they’re going to be perfect for clients who are looking for bridal glam or festival inspiration.
The look: Glamour volume
This Met Gala trend is less about the shape, and all about the volume. We saw Sarah Jessica Parker sporting big, beautiful waves that cascaded down her back, and Nicole Kidman rocked a much looser, though no less stunning, version of the look. Wearing a middle parting Nicole had the loosest waves sweeping past her shoulders and a touch of volume right on the crown.
The great thing about this voluminous trend is that your client doesn’t have to have super long hair; we also saw Gigi Hadid wearing a big, beautiful blowout. Her jaw length bob was given a gorgeous curl thanks to heated rollers and the finished look perfectly flattered her face shape.
Gigi’s stylist Laura Polko said the key to this look was to focus on volumising products for prep, so shampoo, conditioner and mousse are key for this style.
Perfect for clients who: have spent the best part of a year growing their hair out for their wedding day. This is a great way for them to show their length off.
Amp it up: Add embellished accessories, bows, slides and clips decorated with pearls and Swarovski crystals to add some real red carpet glam.
The look: Twisted and spiky
For clients who prefer their hair up and out of the way, another key Met moment was the updo. We saw a romantic take on this timeless classic from Jennifer Lopez, who wore a twisted updo with the most beautiful sections pulled out around her ears to avoid it looking too severe. Hairspray would have been essential to keep those pieces looking fluffy and feathered.
Elsewhere we saw Emily Ratajkowski, AKA Emrata, wearing a modern take on the trend, that was very reminiscent of the spiky styles of the 2000s. The front of the hair was parted into a middle parting with two super straight sections that curved around her face, while the back was braided and then twisted, creating 3 different fan-like pieces that framed her face from the back.
Perfect for clients who: don’t want to fit into the traditional mold of classical updos and delicate chignons for their wedding day but still want something intricate. Also great for anyone who’s missing the early 2000s styles and wants to add glitter for a fun festival look.
Amp it up: Be sure to use products that intensify gloss so those pulled out pieces look healthy.
The look: Beautiful braided accents
Braids are the perfect addition to add oomph to any style, without actually adding accessories to the hair. If your client has good length, braids can add crowns, texture and delicate shapes, which of course, makes them perfect for anyone who’s headed to a festival.
On the Met Gala red carpet, we were blown away with the pretty braids that Native American model Quannah Chasinghorse wore. Her hair was swept back on top into a ponytail, with 2-3 braids on each side of her head that were woven into an inverted French braid. Essential for recreating this style are products that give some hold, such as a mousse or serum.
Perfect for clients who: love to play! Festival season is upon us and braided styles are the perfect solution for clients of all hair types.
Amp it up: This is the time to add coloured extensions, feather clips, glitter – literally everything, all at once.
