Bright Future
The world is awash with colour as we embrace the new normal. Here we speak to some of the best in the industry to find out the colours your clients will be craving this summer.
VIVID AND VIBRANT
It’s easy to understand the desire for brighter, bolder colour as clients have had a lot of time to think about what they want to try next! For Jeseca McMahon of Son of a Bleach, Stourport, it’s always been about the most vibrant shades. “Our regular clients have either booked in for a mix of their usual vivid tones or have decided to strip the old colour and go for something completely new. Throughout lockdown I experimented on wigs and dolls and found so many new techniques so they’re eager to try a new look,” says Jeseca.
Adele Clarke, of Spectrum Hair, St Helen’s, says clients are looking for colour that boosts their confidence. She says:” it’s a time of reinvention. We will have the cautious people who want to go for lighter, brighter tones to lift their mood, but without the high maintenance but there will also be those clients who want to completely break the mould and throw caution to the wind!” Nikita Fisher of Palmer Fisher, London agrees. “Although I like to encourage my clients to not follow trends, I think a lot of them will be up for doing something completely different this summer and looking to experiment with colour. I think face-framing and money piece styles will be hugely popular, with lots of coppers and glossy tones – bringing back those ‘90s vibes.”
ILLUMINATED!
Here Goldwell Master Colourist Safy Burton shares her SS21 colour forecasts.
#1 When I think of SS21 colour I’m thinking…
Perfect Pastels We’ve seen a huge increase in the use of pastels, with shades such as mint green, lilac, rose and peach trending for the season. It’s all about a light and fresh vibe.
#2 Key colour trend that my clients ask for
It has to be cosy copper tones. Before lockdown there was huge demand for beautiful, rich copper tones and they’re here to stay for the summer, but we’ll see them in lighter, more subtle shades. Also, expect to see glowing copper become the colour of the year for redheads!
#3 Where I find my colour inspiration
I am inspired by everything I see; from nature and flowers to the sun rising and setting and all the transitions in between, whether that’s in the sky or on the ground.
#4 Why Goldwell Elumen is the perfect tool for SS21 trends
Elumen is one of my favourite colour ranges and is the perfect tool for these trends as it’s great for both natural and vivid tones. Elumen gives the hair an incredible multi-tonal effect, like applying lipgloss - which leaves the hair striking and ready to stand out.

RAINBOWLAND
There are no limits when it comes to vivid colour this season. For Darrel Starkey of Taylor’s Hair Studio it’s all about celebrating individuality as clients look towards bold choices. “For me there are two key trends,” says Darrel. “First, it’s about fiery red; think ruby and fire shades that are eyecatching, warm and strong. Next, it’s peach blossom, inspired by last years’ pastels but taking it a step further by adding warm blonde and fiery reds at the roots. Think a peach balayage!”
A RIOT OF COLOUR
We spoke to some members of Pulp Riot’s Riot Squad to find out which brights they’re most looking forward to for summer.
“I think summer will present two polar opposites when it comes to hair colour. There will be some clients who are now used to their natural hair and will want to keep it more low maintenance. But there is also another group of clients who are used to working from home and I predict they will be after bright and experimental hair colours. Think creative colour bleeds, holographic hair and bright panels.” @lorettamarie_hair
“This year, more than ever, people are looking for fun and excitement! For me that means tons of bright and bold pops of colour and of course - lots and lots of pink.”@karathomsonhair
“The key colours that most of my clients are asking for range from super icy tones to silvers and greys, which are an absolute dream to achieve with the Pulp Riot High Speed Toners. My clients also love vivid shades so it’s lots of sunshine yellows, vibrant pinks and beautiful blues. I like to call them headturners!” @douglasreidhair

Vegan and Cruelty-Free Hair and Beauty: Simple Swaps and Recommendations for Veganuary
The new year often brings a sense of renewal, self-improvement and positive change. For many, this means reducing the consumption of animal products and embracing a more compassionate lifestyle. As hair and beauty professionals, we can support and promote this growing movement by embracing vegan and cruelty-free options. However, transitioning to fully vegan products may initially seem daunting. This is why, in this post, we will explore some simple swaps you can try in January that are still highly effective and recommendations for vegan styling products and treatments to expand your offerings this Veganuary. We aim to make embracing ethical beauty approachable and attainable so you can focus on what matters most - caring for your clients with confidence and care.
Simple swaps this Veganuary
Start Small: It can be overwhelming to transition to fully vegan products overnight. One simple swap you can make is changing your hair brushes and combs to those made from natural materials such as bamboo (link to bamboo page) or wood. Not only are these products sustainable and eco-friendly, but they also help reduce static hair and promote healthy shine. Another easy swap for your salon or personal use is choosing cruelty-free and vegan nail polishes from brands like The Manicure Company. Ethically made and with an unwavering commitment to being a vegan and cruelty-free brand, Zero Gel Polish is widely available at our stores and comes in a vast array of colours. These small changes can make a big difference
